Raccoon Rascal

Sterling North lives with his father and dog Hauser in Brailsford Junction, Wisconsin, after his mother's hospitalization and brother's departure to the Western Front. To temporarily escape his daily chores, Sterling joins his friend Oscar for a fishing trip. There, they stumble upon an orphaned raccoon kit whose mother was killed by a hunter for her fur. Sterling adopts the kit, which he names Rascal, and the responsibilities of caring for it become a source of comfort during his family's difficulties.
