Tamako Kitashirakawa is a teenage girl from a family of mochi bakers in the Usagiyama Shopping District. The family runs a small shop called Tama-ya, where Tamako's clumsiness is often a source of amusement for the local community. Dera Mochimazzi, a talking bird claiming to be royalty, moves in with Tamako's family after developing an addiction to their mochi, becoming unable to fly back to his homeland. As Dera becomes a beloved fixture in the community, Tamako's friend Mochizou Ooji struggles to express his feelings for her, complicated by the rivalry between their fathers.
