Onimusha is set in a feudal Japan plagued by poverty and evil. The series closely follows the story of Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary swordsman and inspiration for the anime's protagonist design, which is modeled after Toshiro Mifune. Musashi's actions drive the plot as he seeks to challenge the darkness afflicting his land.
